Sources of Foot Pain

Foot pain can be caused due to a variety of issues. Injuries, such as sprains, strains, and fractures, are common sources of foot pain for those who are active and commonly partake in sporting activities. Another condition which can cause foot pain is gout, a common type of arthritis that forms due to too much uric acid in the blood. Poorly fitted shoes can lead to painful issues such as bunions, a bony growth that develops on the side of the big toe, as well as ingrown toenails, where the nail grows into the surrounding skin. Plantar fasciitis, the inflammation of the band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes, can lead to pain in the heel or the arch of the foot. If you are suffering from foot pain, being under the care of a podiatrist is highly suggested.

From Crawling to Walking

Many people think babies' feet are smaller versions of their own adult feet, despite the fact that they go through a detailed developmental process. There are levels of growth in babies' feet. They start out crawling, and this phase can strengthen the feet by stretching the toes. As children start to walk, their feet become toned, and their soft cartilage begins to harden. It is beneficial to refrain from having your child wear shoes while walking indoors, as this can help to stretch the ligaments, tendons, and muscles that are found in each foot. The first pair of shoes should be worn when walking begins outside. It is important to monitor your child’s foot development and to be aware of any abnormalities if they appear. If you would like additional information about the stages of babies’ foot development, please consult with a podiatrist.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Cracked Heels and Fissures

Heel fissures often occur with cracked heels. Fissures are deep cracks in the skin of the heel that can cause severe pain and discomfort. They often develop as a result of standing on hard surfaces for the majority of the day or from wearing shoes that have an open back such as flip flops.  Cracked heels can also form in the warmer months. Additionally, patients who have existing medical conditions such as psoriasis or eczema may be prone to developing cracked heels. The cracks will generally develop on the side of the heel, as daily activities are accomplished. Some patients find it helpful to soak their feet in warm water, followed by using a good moisturizer. Severely cracked heels can become infected, and it is strongly recommended that you consult with a podiatrist if you suffer from this condition.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Wesley Chapel and Tampa, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Flat Feet May Affect Ankle Mobility

Patients who have little or no arch in their feet may have flat feet which is a condition that can occur due to genetics. Frequently practicing stretching techniques may help the feet to feel better. Many patients find that they experience pain due to their flat feet when they change the shoes that they wear or when their exercise volume and intensity has increased. Ankle dorsiflexion, the ability to point the ankle up while in a standing position, is generally affected with flat feet. There are specific stretches that can be implemented which may help to improve ankle movement. If you were born with or have developed flat feet and are dealing with foot pain, please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can determine the best treatment for you.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Wesley Chapel and Tampa, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
