Causes of Thick Toenails

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is caused by fungi that invade the nail bed, leading to thick, discolored, and brittle nails. Symptoms often include yellow or white streaks under the nail, a foul smell, and in severe cases, pain or detachment of the nail. Thickened toenails can also result from trauma, poor circulation, or other medical conditions. If you notice significant discoloration, pain, or the nail lifting from the bed, it is important to consult a podiatrist, as persistent or severe infections often require medical attention. This type of doctor can provide prescription antifungal medications or recommend laser therapy, depending on the severity of the condition. If you have toenail fungus or thick toenails, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation and effective treatment options.

For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists of New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

What Causes Bunions?

A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms at the base of the big toe, causing the toe to angle inward toward the other toes. This deformity can lead to pain, swelling, and difficulty finding comfortable footwear, and can significantly affect daily activities. The primary causes of bunions include genetics, wearing improper footwear, especially tight or high-heeled shoes, and certain foot structures. When the big toe is forced out of alignment, it places increased pressure on the joint, leading to inflammation and pain. Even after treatment, bunions can return if underlying factors, like shoe choice or foot mechanics, are not addressed. Treatment options include conservative measures like wearing supportive shoes and using custom orthotics to reduce pressure, as well as more invasive solutions like surgery for severe cases. If you have a bunion or are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested  that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss treatment options for relief, tailored to your needs.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact one of our podiatrists of New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

Understanding Plantar Heel Pain in Athletes

Plantar heel pain is a common injury among athletes, often caused by conditions like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or heel spurs. The biomechanics of each sport can influence the risk. Runners face repetitive impact, while soccer players endure sudden changes in direction. Proper shoe gear is key as supportive footwear can help absorb shock and reduce strain on the plantar fascia. Additionally, the playing surface matters. Harder surfaces like concrete can worsen heel pain due to increased impact. A thorough evaluation can help differentiate between these injuries. Addressing biomechanics, footwear, and training practices is important for prevention and recovery, enabling athletes to return to their routines. If your heel pain persists or impedes your daily activities, it is suggested you make an appointment with a podiatrist. This foot doctor can assess your condition, provide tailored treatment options, and help you get back to your sport pain-free.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Definition and Purpose of Foot Orthoses

Custom foot orthoses are devices designed to provide support, alignment, and cushioning for the feet. They are placed inside shoes to enhance comfort and improve overall foot function. These devices can help address conditions like flat feet, plantar fasciitis, and other foot-related ailments. By redistributing pressure and correcting biomechanical imbalances, foot orthoses can alleviate pain and prevent further injury. They are particularly beneficial for individuals who spend long hours on their feet or engage in high-impact activities. Additionally, foot orthoses play a vital role in enhancing athletic performance by promoting better posture and reducing fatigue. If you have foot pain and are searching for relief methods, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can discuss the benefits of custom orthotics with you.

If you are experiencing discomfort in your feet and would like to try custom orthotics, contact one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Shoe inserts come in a wide variety and are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality, custom inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you're experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibility of using custom orthotics or shoe inserts. A podiatrist can determine which type of custom orthotic or shoe insert is right for you and help you take the first steps toward being pain-free.

If you have any questions please contact our office located in Wesley Chapel, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Bad Habits for Your Feet

Your feet endure a lot, but certain habits can damage them over time. For starters, wearing high heels or shoes that are too tight can lead to a host of issues, like bunions, corns, and even chronic pain. High heels, while stylish, alter your gait and put extra pressure on the toes and balls of your feet. To avoid these problems, opt for well-fitting shoes with ample room in the toe box and supportive soles. Additionally, do not overlook the impact of flip-flops. While they might be a go-to for the beach, they offer little support and can contribute to issues like plantar fasciitis and arch pain. Do not forget about socks. They are not just for warmth. Wearing socks helps prevent friction and blisters, keeping your feet more comfortable throughout the day. Finally, remember to replace worn-out shoes. As shoes age, their support diminishes, which can lead to foot pain and alignment issues. If you are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for personalized advice and solutions for healthier, happier feet.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Foot Pain From Standing All Day at Work

Foot pain from standing at work all day is a common issue, especially for those in jobs requiring prolonged periods of standing or walking. This discomfort is often caused by pressure on the feet, leading to conditions like plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, or arch strain. Wearing unsupportive shoes or standing on hard surfaces can worsen the problem, leading to foot fatigue, swelling, and even long-term damage. Symptoms may include aching, burning, or sharp pain in the arches, heels, or balls of the feet. Over time, the pain can spread to the ankles, knees, or lower back. To manage foot pain, it is important to wear supportive footwear with proper arch support and cushioning. If you have foot pain for any reason, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for a tailored treatment plan.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from New Tampa Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.
